"02 GOLF: The Long Cross Country"

by John Purner

02 GOLF: The Long Cross Country The reviews I have written of other authors books have found favor with you. So here's a new one that I hope you'll like just as much. It is a review of my latest book, a semi-autobiographical sketch dealing not with destination as my other books have. This time I explore the reason we fly which has everything to do with the journey.

The seventeenth century English poet Robert Herrick was right when he said, "gather ye rosebuds while ye may." 02 GOLF - The Long Cross Country is the story of how one pilot caused the buds of his imagination to blossom into the lifelong pleasure of flight into the unknowable.

A short time ago I wrote an article for the $100 Hamburger Burger Blog section titled simply, "The Long Cross Country". The response to it was very flattering. A few of you went so far as to advise me to tell more by turning the yarn into a book. As my French Grandmother used to say, "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it!"

The pre-publication reviewers all describe 02 GOLF - The Long Cross Country with just one word - Inspiring! It tells the tale of those of us who for one reason or another put flying off for another day which didn't arrive until our middle years.

At the tender age of 42, I found myself with a pilot's license and a plane and the time to enjoy them both. Off I went in search of adventure. My initial objective was easy as I had a sailboat berthed in San Diego, California and I was living in Houston, Texas. A personal airplane even a Cessna 150 seemed like the perfect tool to bridge that gap. But was it?

I had only 100 hours in my log book when I went wheels up on my "California or Bust" journey. Could I really fly myself ALL the way to California from Texas? What about the mountains? What about the distance?

A Cessna 150 doesn't fly very high and its range is very small. Was I crazy to even dream about making such a long trip in such a small plane? How would I prepare the plane and the pilot? I did it the way you would do it, one mile at a time. Helped by strangers that became friends, every difficulty was met and every challenge overcome. That is all but one.
